All my works composed for public projections are now made either in Cinema 32/42 or Ring 32/44/52 formats. You will find all the relative informations on this document.


If you have access to or can build such a loudspeakers arrangement, you can dowload the multichannel files directly from this link, and simply follow the channels mapping and level calibration instructions.

But one of the advantages of a high spatial resolution is that it can then be easily downscaled to other less demanding formats, with minimal loss. Of course, each time a channel is removed, clarity and subtlety is replaced with some spatial fuzziness, which will also lead to a narrower listening point.
For example, from Cinema 38 :

blue + green + red + yellow + purple : NHK 22.2 (favorite)
blue + green + red + yellow : Microsoft 17.1 (good)
blue + green + red : Auro 13.1 (possibly)
blue + green : Auro 11.1
blue : Auro 9.1

Please contact me if your system is able to provide a minimum of : 16 channels, organized in two height levels, with at least a center top speaker. An adaptation will be certainly possible.
Dolby ATMOS layouts are alas not suitable because they provide only one height level on the sides.



22.2 NHK

The NHK 22.2 format benefits now of a large international recognition : it is a ITU-SMPTE standard (ITU-R BS.2159-6), and we can logically hope that it will become more and more present in the electroacoustic community during the next years.
Compared to the 32/42 channels format I use, we loose the proscenium and some details and mobility at the top center, but all that is necessary is preserved. 

You can download the pieces in Wave format, 24 channels / 24 bits / 48 kHz. The channel mapping follows the NHK specifications, as shown above and in this picture.
Note : the two LFE channels (channels 4 and 10) are empty. It is preferable to use some bass management that fits your setup (see below).

If your software dosen't support such files (among DAWs, only Ardour and Reaper can do it) you will have to convert them to series of mono files with De-interleaver in OS X or Wavewizard in Windows.

Technical note

The volume of all my pieces is set according to the K-System in K-20 : a digital reference level (-20 dBFS RMS pink noise) corresponds to -83 dBSPL for each channel, at the average listening point. The result is that my pieces often seem to be too quiet compared to other ones if no proper calibration is done.
During diffusion, one have of course to deal with the distances and acoustic of the room (and also personnal preferences), but the 83 dB correspondence seems to work in most cases.
The R-128 Loudness mesure can be used in complement, in particular if non K-System pieces have to be played in the same program, but it is not appropriate to use it solely, since it doesn't reflect the real level at which the work must be heard.
